Like you said, if people are willing to pay for your photos they will, and if not, they won't. And there's a lot of highly valuable work on Unsplash. Don't undervalue your own work. If you give it away for free, then Fair Use might have nothing to do with it. But there are times when folks don't care how it was given. The imagined "glory" of getting images used? Gawblimey, tell me, I really want to know I wonder how many hobby photographers would quit their day jobs knowing they could make as much or more money selling their photography. Very few these days. But almost all could have been making extra money to partly-fully pay for new camera equipment, travel, etc.
I think there is plenty of opportunity to earn a significant amount of money either as supplemental income or day job replacement. It's understanding what your work is worth and how to connect with buyers. The problem is lack of sales, marketing and general business knowledge.
A sharp businessperson with average photos will likely outsell a non-businessperson with amazing photos. I don't get it. Where is the "glory" if someone uses your image without even crediting you, as Unsplash terms allow. Bragging rights? Downloaded photo ends up on a book cover, popular website, TV commercial or whatever.
First you would have to find your uncredited, unpaid for image before "bragging" about it. It's easy to find photos using Google Image search and other tools.
